How a single borehole transformed health outcomes for an entire community in rural Nasarawa State.
For the residents of Akwanga village in Nasarawa State, access to clean water was a daily struggle. Women and children would walk over three kilometers to fetch water from a contaminated stream, water that made them sick more often than not.
Waterborne diseases like typhoid, cholera, and dysentery were common. Children missed school frequently due to illness, and mothers spent hours each day on water collection instead of pursuing economic activities.
In partnership with local government and community leaders, WeShare Charity funded and supervised the construction of a solar-powered borehole in the heart of Akwanga village. The project was completed in three months, bringing clean, safe water within minutes of every household.
The results have been remarkable:
"Before the borehole, I would wake up at 4 AM to fetch water before going to school," says 14-year-old Emmanuel. "Now I have time to study and help my mother with other chores."
Village elder Mama Grace adds: "This water has brought life to our community. Our children are healthier, our crops are better, and we have hope for the future."
